Is It Worth Traveling for Dental Treatment? An Honest Answer With the Numbers (2026)

Posted on 10/10/2026

The short answer

For larger treatments, usually yes. With implants, crowns, veneers or All-on-4 you save hundreds to thousands of euros per tooth, even after travel. For small things like a single filling it's usually not worth it. The biggest risk isn't the country, it's the choice of clinic: so before you decide, ask for a written plan, the price, the implant brand and the warranty.

Is dental treatment abroad worth it: when it is and when it isn't

How much do you really save once travel is included?

For larger treatments, still a lot. Three implants with crowns cost €2,550 with us and €6,600–15,000 in Germany. Even if two trips cost €600, you still save at least €3,450.

1 all-ceramic crown€600 – 900€200€100 – 400 (1 trip)
1 implant with crown€2,200 – 5,000€850€750 – 3,550 (2 trips)
3 implants with crowns€6,600 – 15,000€2,550€3,450 – 11,850 (2 trips)
All-on-4 (1 jaw)€12,000 – 18,000€4,000€7,400 – 13,400 (2 trips)

* The calculation assumes €300 for travel and accommodation per trip, as an example. If you're visiting family anyway, there's practically no travel cost. 2026 prices, indicative. For the detailed implant price comparison, see Dental implant cost in Serbia 2026.

Is dental treatment abroad safe?

Yes, when you choose a proven clinic. The real risk isn't the country, it's choosing a clinic only on advertising, price or online reviews.

Reviews can help, but today some are bought, exaggerated or written with AI. What matters far more is that the clinic is known by someone who has followed its patients for months and years after treatment, and who knows how the clinic behaves when something needs fixing.

Implants themselves are now one of the most reliable methods in dentistry: large studies show more than 95% of implants still successful after ten years.[1] The same implant brands are used in Serbia, Bosnia and Germany.

What are the real risks of dental treatment abroad?

The most common problems are ill-fitting crowns, over-prepared teeth and lost implants, usually after rushed treatment without a good plan.

In a British Dental Association survey of 1,000 dentists (2022), 86% said they had treated patients with problems after treatment abroad. Crowns caused the most problems, followed by implants.[2] That doesn't mean treatment abroad is bad. It means a good plan, enough healing time and a clinic that takes responsibility after treatment are what make the difference.

When is dental treatment abroad NOT worth it?

When the job is small, when you can't make two trips, or when someone promises major work "in three days" without an X-ray and a plan.

  • A single filling or a scale and polish: the saving is too small compared with the trip.
  • You can't travel twice, but need implants that have to heal.
  • You have untreated gum disease: that has to be treated first.
  • There's no written plan and price before you travel.
  • Someone pushes far more teeth than you need, or grinding down healthy teeth.

How to choose a dental clinic abroad: 8 questions

The UK dental regulator (GDC) recommends asking these questions before treatment abroad.[3] Ask every clinic, including us:

  1. Who will treat me, and what experience do they have?
  2. Do I get a written plan and price before I travel?
  3. Which implant brand and which crown material?
  4. What's included in the price, and what costs extra?
  5. How long is the warranty, and is it in writing?
  6. Who pays for travel and corrections if something isn't right?
  7. Who do I contact after I get home?
  8. How many visits and days do I need?

What if something goes wrong after you get home?

The first step is always to talk to the clinic that did the treatment. The problem needs a proper diagnosis: not every complication is a mistake, but a responsible clinic always looks for a fair and practical solution.

Dentistry works with living tissue. Even when everything is done correctly, an implant sometimes doesn't integrate or part of a crown chips. Causes can include general health, smoking, oral hygiene, bone quality, or a compromise, such as fewer implants than the dentist recommended, for budget reasons.

Worth knowing: a dentist in Germany isn't obliged to correct dental work done abroad, except in an emergency.[4] That's why a written warranty from the treating clinic matters so much. With us: lifetime on the implant and 5 years on crowns, with check-ups you can combine with your visits home. More in You got a dental implant in Serbia — what to expect when you get back home.

How many times do you need to travel?

For crowns and veneers usually once, for a few days. For implants and All-on-4 usually twice, with a few months of healing in between. You get the exact schedule with your plan, so you can combine the visits with family trips.

Why is dental treatment cheaper in Serbia and Bosnia?

Because practices cost less to run, not because of cheaper materials. Rent, salaries and overheads are lower, while implants and equipment are the same international brands. Frequently asked questions

Is it worth getting dental work in Serbia if I live in Germany?

Is it worth it for a single crown?

If you're visiting family anyway, yes. If you'd travel just for one crown, the saving is small.

Are implants in Serbia lower quality?
