What If Something Goes Wrong After Dental Treatment Abroad? Warranty and Who Pays

Posted on 10/24/2026

The short answer

Contact the clinic that treated you, fastest on WhatsApp, with a photo or X-ray. The dentist assesses what's needed. With us, we pay for repairs under warranty; travel and accommodation, if you need to come back, are paid by you. The warranty applies as long as you attend the check-ups your dentist recommends. Worth knowing: a dentist at home isn't obliged to correct work done abroad, except in an emergency.

What to do if something goes wrong after dental treatment abroad: 4 steps

What should you do first if something isn't right?

Contact the clinic that treated you and send a photo or X-ray. Don't wait for your next trip: the sooner the problem is looked at, the simpler the fix.

  1. Photograph the problem and, if you can, get an X-ray from a local dentist.
  2. Send a WhatsApp message: what happened, since when, and whether it hurts.
  3. The dentist assesses whether it's urgent, what's causing it and what's needed.
  4. We agree a solution: for small problems we look for the simplest route, so you don't travel unnecessarily. If a visit is needed, we choose the date together.
  5. Repairs under warranty are done at no cost for work and materials.

Who pays for repairs after treatment abroad?

With us, we pay for repairs under warranty. Travel and accommodation, if you need to come to the clinic, are paid by the patient. Before any treatment abroad, ask the clinic exactly this, and get the answer in writing.

WhatWho pays with us
Repair under warranty (work and materials)we do
Travel and accommodation, if you need to comethe patient
Emergency care at home (severe pain, swelling)according to your insurance
Problem outside the warranty (e.g. without recommended check-ups)the patient, at the price in the plan

How long is the warranty, and when does it apply?

With us you get a lifetime warranty on implants and 5 years on crowns and bridges, in writing. The condition is that you attend the check-ups your dentist recommends.

Check-ups aren't a formality. In a systematic review of All-on-4, most implant failures, 74%, happened in the first 12 months.[1] That's why the first check-ups matter most: it's when a small problem is easiest to fix. You can easily combine them with your visits home.

Common problems after treatment, and how urgent they are

Mild pain and swelling in the first days are normal. It's urgent if swelling spreads, if you have a fever or pus, or if an implant moves.

Who pays for repairs after dental treatment abroad: warranty, travel and accommodation

Will a dentist in Germany or Austria fix work done abroad?

They don't have to, except in an emergency. You'll get emergency care at home, for example for severe pain or swelling, but repairs and the warranty are the responsibility of the clinic that did the work.

The German Federal Dental Association states that a dentist in Germany isn't obliged to correct dental work done abroad, except in acute emergencies.[2] AOK also warns that the German two-year warranty may not apply to work done abroad.[3] Many dentists still help, especially if they know which implant was placed. That's why documentation matters so much.

What is an implant passport, and why do you need one?

An implant passport is a document with the details of the implant you received: brand, model and size. With it, any dentist knows which system they're working with and which parts to order.

With us you get an implant passport on request. Ask for it after placement and keep it with your health records.

What does the law say if there's a dispute?

Disputes about treatment are governed by the law of the country where you were treated. A written agreement before treatment is therefore the best protection.

The German Federal Dental Association points this out too.[2] Germany's consumer advice centre recommends agreeing a full written cost estimate and clear rules for corrections before treatment starts.[4] A clear plan, price and warranty terms on paper protect both you and the clinic.

How to reduce the risk of something going wrong

  • Get the plan, price and warranty terms in writing before you travel.
  • Attend the recommended check-ups: it's also a condition of the warranty.
  • Ask for your implant passport after placement.
  • Don't cut the healing time short to save a trip.
  • Keep implants and bridges clean, and avoid smoking if you can.
  • Get in touch straight away when you notice a change.
